3.1 Disciplines

In Glean you never study discrete courses, chapters or exercises. Instead you merely specify an area of interest, and Glean will guide you through that area how it sees fit (see Opportunities).

We call such areas of interest disciplines. A discipline glues exercises (see Exercises), reference materials and tutorials into a cohesive whole. A discipline could be as small as “The Alphabet”, or as big as “Physics”.

But disciplines do not merely provide a heading under which we find content. Disciplines are designed recursively: we can define further disciplines in terms of already existing disciplines and add new content as necessary. As a result it is possible to “compose” disciplines into larger wholes.
